In the municipality of San Martín one of the oldest and most important festivals of the department is celebrated: Las Cuadrillas de San Martín, declared cultural heritage of the nation. In this festival you can witness musical events that include joropo and coleo among other activities full of party and joy.
Mother Monte is a corpulent woman, dressed in leaves and vegetation of the rivers, lives in the births of the ravines and hides in leafytrees. She screamsprovoke torrential rains. She is feared for punishing unfaithful men, hunters and those who attack the earth.
Fireball or Candileja is a little light that looks like a torch in the distance in the dark plain, many say that the fireball moves quickly until it approaches the one who sees it, rapidly increasing its size and sometimes there are those who see its deathly face. It is believed that there is no need to pray to her, rather she is frightened to hear insults, so many scare her away with fierce words.
